Hunter dated various actresses in order to improve his image.

Hunter was photographed with Debbie Reynolds, Dorothy Malone and Natalie Wood. Meanwhile, Hunter was having a secret affair with actor Anthony Perkins.

Hunter became a teen idol by recording the pop tune "Young Love", which topped the charts for some time in 1957.

On TV, he starred in the Tab Hunter Show (1960-1961).
